Wine is a free Windows API implementation (Win16, Win32) that enables you to run applications designed for the already mentioned system under x86 platforms, to run native Windows DLLs. It is basically an open code project developed under GNU-LGPL license that enables you to run applications generated for Windows on top of X, OpenGL and Unix.

Wine should not be mistakes by an emulator, since it does not work as such. In its beginnings it was actually an emulator but the evolution of the project allowed running native applications (in most cases, it is not necessary to establish modifications).

It is worth mentioning that Wine does not include by default absolutely all the necessary libraries to use specific applications and games. Besides since the letter types are not fully installed, it is also possible to have some visualization problems in particular applications.

Despite of the fact previously mentioned, we should highlight that it is very easy to add sources and libraries. You just have to go to the configuration panel and follow the necessary steps. You can also decide in this panel which system you are going to implement and customize various aspects.

Wine enables you to run applications that are designed for the whole range of Microsoft operative systems, from MS-DOS to Windows Vista.
